A separate shelf for discounted food found in more and more K-food stores – The Sales of red-flagged expiring products grew by 12% last year

K Group reached its target of decreasing food waste by 13% from the 2016 level by 2021. In addition to systematic selection management, K-stores’ innovative solutions, such as loss-preventing discount shelves and the increasing amount of products that make use of food that would otherwise be wasted, as well as the popularity of red-flagged discounted products, played important roles in reaching the target.

Kesko accelerates the circular economy of construction plastics by being the first in its field of business to join the Green Deal of Construction Plastics

Kesko’s Building and Technical Trade division is the first operator in the trade sector to join the voluntary Green Deal of Construction Plastics. The division includes the technical wholesale company Onninen and the K-Rauta chain, which serves both consumers and business customers. The Green Deal strives to accelerate the circular economy of construction plastics by decreasing the use of plastic and by promoting the recycling of plastic in the construction industry.

A new way to recycle EPS – K-food stores’ fish boxes will become a raw material for the insulation industry

The fresh fish sold at K-food stores’ service counters is transported in boxes made from expanded polystyrene (EPS). More than a million boxes are used each year. K Group is the first retail sector company in Finland to pilot the recycling of fish boxes in cooperation with Lassila & Tikanoja (L&T) and BEWI, an insulation company. Recycled EPS is used as a raw material in the insulation industry in Finland.

Automated collection centre for online grocery orders taking shape at K-Citymarket Ruoholahti in Helsinki

Construction work is progressing swiftly in Ruoholahti as Finland’s first automated in-store collection system for online grocery orders is starting to take shape. Currently, storage frames are being built, along which 45 robots helping in product collection will run in the future. Once finished, the system will enable efficient, short-distance online grocery deliveries, while still enabling the wide selections valued by customers.
