K-Citymarket Pori Mikkola is the first store to sell gluten-free pick ’n mix sweets under the new K-irtomakeiset concept. The sweets have a dedicated shelf-end near other gluten-free products.

It all began with coffee – Fairtrade selections have expanded to include raw chocolate, tofu and super premium ice cream

Fairtrade products have been in K Group’s selections since 1999. Today, Fairtrade selections include more than 200 items. Of the 20 biggest sellers, 11 are Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavours made from Fairtrade ingredients.

K Group pilots a new way to utilise solar power: solar panels at K-Supermarket Hertta installed on the building facade

Wall-mounted solar panels on building facades have not been utilised very much so far, but they could enable increasing solar power production in Finland. K-Supermarket Hertta in Helsinki has solar panels installed on its building facade this October.

Eating out has become a natural everyday thing for Finns

Finns today go to a restaurant not only to indulge or celebrate special occasions, but to spice up everyday life, and more than 50% eat out spontaneously. Most Finns visiting restaurants have a practical approach to eating and focus on filling their stomach. Nearly one-fifth are quality-focused hedonists: this group spends the most time and money on restaurants, and includes especially women and people living in bigger cities. The information comes from a study on Finnish restaurant customers conducted by K Group’s foodservice wholesaler Kespro.

IONITY and K Group to open the third high-power electric car charging station in Finland in Hämeenlinna

The third high-power charging (HPC) station in Finland will be located at K-Citymarket Tiiriö in Hämeenlinna in November. IONITY and K Group will offer electric car drivers travelling on Highway 3 high-power charging points that are up to seven times as efficient as current fast chargers. Construction in Hämeenlinna began today.

New culvert significantly facilitates natural trout movement and reproduction at the Ylösjoki river in Hollola

On 3 August, WWF Finland, K Group and a local water and air protection association organised a volunteering event on the Ylösjoki river in Hollola to restore spawning grounds for trout. Culverts that were blocking trout migration were replaced with a custom-made culvert that enables the trout population to move freely and grow. The new culvert was donated by Pipelife Finland in cooperation with Onninen.

Day care for children enabled Chinese migrant families to be spend the summer together

In July, K Group opened a children’s summer day care facility at a lamp factory in China together with the international organisation the Center for Child Rights and Corporate Social Responsibility (CCR CSR). For six weeks, some 30 children of factory employees attended the day care, and could therefore spend the summer with their parents in the city. Both the families and factory management were very pleased with the project.

Certification labels verify the sustainable origin of wood for customers

Finland is one of the most heavily-forested countries in the world, with forests making up over 70% of its area. Finns use wood and paper products every day, and trust they are being ecological in doing so. What they often do not think about are problems related to forests globally, such as illegal logging and deforestation, which is why Finnish consumers do not necessarily check the origin of a terrace board or wall panel they are buying.
