K-food stores have been promoting Fairtrade for over 20 years. The Finns took a liking to the Pirkka Fairtrade rose bouquets immediately when they appeared in K-food stores in 2006. The Fairtrade symbol on the flowers is proof that the well-being of both people and the environment has been contributed to in the producer countries.

Kesko and Berner started a pilot for a pioneering circular economy cooperation scheme in January 2022 where coffee grounds from Neste K service stations are used to make Pirkka home gardening products. Now, the first test batch of earth for growing has been processed from coffee grounds, and the practice will be expanded for use at all Neste K service stations.

Buying red label products that are close to their sell-by date is a good way to help reduce food waste and at the same time save money on grocery shopping. Thanks to systematic food waste reduction measures, the K Group has been able to reduce food waste by 4% this year compared to the same period last year.

K Group grocery stores offer the largest selections of locally produced food in Finland, comprising as many as 50,000–60,000 products. Work is carried out continuously to develop the selections both at the stores and at Kesko. At the end of August, producers in the Turku region showcased their products to K-retailers at our Local Food Date event.

The Finnish Competition and Consumer Authority has been investigating Kesko Group company Onninen’s suspected violation of competition law for almost 10 years, and has finally decided to take the matter to the Market Court. The investigation has concerned a wide range of companies operating in the HPAC infra plastic pipe product market in Finland. The suspected violation concerns almost in its entirety a period of time before Kesko acquired the capital stock of Onninen from Onvest Oy on 1 June 2016. Consequences resulting to Onninen from the investigation were addressed in the acquisition terms and conditions. Onninen denies the FCCA claims of suspected violation of competition law as unfounded. Kesko is not suspected of participation in the alleged infringement.

Finland’s first automation-assisted in-store collection centre for online grocery orders is now up and running, and the K-Citymarket Ruoholahti hypermarket in Helsinki has delivered the first online grocery orders robots have helped to collect. This represents a new era in Finnish online grocery. Automation increases collection efficiency, which means, among other things, lower delivery prices for customers. However, customers can still choose from the store’s extensive selection of as many as 40,000 products.
