Solar power production will increase in the Mäntsälä area when the solar power plant at K-Citymarket Mäntsälä is taken into use at the end of August. K Group, which is one of the largest solar power producers and users in Finland, invests in renewable energy, and the new solar power plant in Mäntsälä will be its 35th plant.

According to its new climate goals published in the spring, K Group aims to be carbon neutral in 2025 and reduce emissions to zero by 2030. Matti Kalervo, Vice President for Corporate Responsibility at Kesko, tells us more and how the goal will be achieved.

K Group’s K-Ostokset service will soon provide customers with data on the nutritional values of their purchases from K Group grocery stores. The new feature, to be introduced before the end of the year, will allow K Group customers to examine their consumption of e.g. sugars and vegetables, to compare their data to national recommendations, and to set themselves consumption-related targets. The service already enables customers to see how much Finnish products they are purchasing, and what the carbon footprint of their grocery purchases is.

The more than 40,000 solar power panels installed on the rooftops of K Group stores produced a record 3,000 MWh of pure solar electricity in May and June this year. When conditions are right, solar power can cover the majority of a store’s daily electricity needs. With 34 solar power plants, K Group is one of the biggest producers and users of solar power in Finland.

At their highest, monthly visits to K Group’s online grocery stores increased by over 800%* during the coronavirus epidemic restrictions this spring. In addition to an increase in user numbers, changes could also be seen in ways people use online grocery services. While home deliveries per month grew at their highest by some 500%, the growth in pick & collect services exceeded 2,000% at one point. Of the customer segments, online grocery shopping increased the most among seniors and adult households.

Kesko Corporation's subsidiary Byggmakker Handel AS has agreed to acquire Carlsen Fritzøe Handel AS, a Norwegian operator in the building and home improvement trade with net sales of approximately €201 million in 2019. The acquisition strengthens Kesko’s position in one of the most attractive geographic areas in Norway, the Oslo fjord region, where the Carlsen Fritzøe Handel network of 25 stores highly complements the Byggmakker store network. This transaction is the fourth Kesko has made in line with its growth strategy in Norway in two years to accelerate its growth and strengthen its position in the Norwegian building and home improvement market.
