KESKO CORPORATION PRESS RELEASE 08.05.2014 1(1)
K-stores and Kesko offer summer jobs for some 5,000 youngsters and students
K-retailers and Kesko employ an estimated total of 5,000 summer workers this summer. That is about the same number as last year. The K-Group is one of the biggest summer employers in Finland.
The most active employers of youngsters and students in the K-Group are K-food stores. Summer is a high season in building and home improvement stores, and they also employ seasonal employees in the yard and garden departments.
- The number of summer employees is divided so that K-retailers employ a bit less than 4,000 people and the Kesko Group including its subsidiaries a bit more than 1,000 summer employees, says Kesko Corporation Head of HRM Mikko Myyryläinen.
The jobs of young people in stores consist mainly of shelving, keeping the store neat and tidy and customer service. Especially in small stores, jobs often get more varied and involve more responsibility as the summer goes on and the employee learns more.
A large portion of summer employees start working in June. The summer job season in stores already starts in May and continues until the last weeks of August.
Many paths to employment
Kesko and K-stores employ young people through many channels. The very youngest get experience in the trading sector in the 'Learn and earn' summer job programme. Kesko and K-stores are also involved in the youth guarantee programme through which more than 900 young people in its target group have been employed in the K-Group since August 2013.
- Kesko and K-stores employ almost 20,000 people less than 30 years of age in eight countries, says Myyryläinen.
K-job 2014 competition during the summer
Kesko and the K-Retailers' Association are looking for the Young employee of the year and the Employer of the young of the year. Customers and personnel can propose their favourites at www.kesko.fi/k-duuni2014 until 31 August 2014.
- Through the K-job 2014 competition, we want to bring out and reward our young employees who have impressed our customers or, as members of the working community, our personnel. We also want to reward those K-stores and units of the Kesko Group that have made an effort to offer work to young people, says Myyryläinen.
Based on the proposals submitted in the competition, the Board of the K-Retailers' Association will select the Young employee and the Employer of the young of the year. The winners will be rewarded at the K-Group's K-Team Päivät event on 1 November.
10 K-gift cards valued 50 each will be drawn among all participants in the competition who have entered a proposal and their contact information.
