KESKO SCHOLARSHIPS TO YOUNG ART STUDENTS AND ATHLETES
Kesko awarded young promising athletes and art students for the 15th time. This year a Kesko scholarship was given to 16 young artists and 26 promising athletes starting their careers. Additionally Kesko grants were given to a variety of Finnish scientific, research, educational and non-profit organisations. The total value of the scholarships and grants was about 176,000 euros.
The Kesko scholarship recipients were chosen on the recommendations made by art academies and sports organisations, including the Finnish Amateur Athletics' Association, the Finnish sports association of mentally handicapped people, the Finnish Association of Sports for the Disabled, The Finnish Workers' Sports Federation TUL, and the Swedish sports federation 'Finlands Svenska Idrott CIF rf' among others. The recipients of the Kesko culture scholarship represented four fine arts universities.
Financial support was also granted to the Disabled War Veterans Association of Finland, the Soldier's Home Organization, the Kuusikoti old-age home, the foundation for Finnish nature conservation and the foundation for the Finnish Salvation Army. Kesko also funds a Marketing Chair and an E-commerce Chair at the Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration, and an E-business Chair a the University of Jyväskylä.
Additionally Kesko finances a project implemented by UNICEF India preventing the use of child labour in the town of Bhiwandi, near Mumbai. The project started in 2000. Bhiwandi has strong weaving industry, which employs about 25,000 children, mainly boys aged from 7 to 14. According to the annual report by the project management, the finance provided by Kesko has so far enabled approximately 1,000 working boys to start attending school on a part-time basis.
On Monday next week, Kesko will publish its second report on corporate responsibility based on international guidelines.
