THE LARGEST INTERSPORT MEGASTORE IN FINLAND OPENED IN HELSINKI

The newest Intersport store - Intersport Megastore Helsinki City -was opened today in the centre of Helsinki. It is the biggest outlet of the chain with a selling area on two floors totalling nearly 2,500 square metres. The retailer couple Eero Pöhö and Riitta Jutila also continue to run the Intersport store in the Forum shopping centre in Helsinki.

With regard to the store interior and product selection, the new store is built in line with the K-Alliance’s new sports goods store concept. Kesko is developing its operations intensively through the introduction of new store types in its sports goods trade. The plan includes opening of new store premises and increasing of selling area.

The Intersport Megastore aims at being the market leader within its catchment area. The first Intersport Megastore was opened last year in April in the Itäkeskus shopping centre in Helsinki. Within the next few years, a total of about ten Intersport Megastores will be opened in the major growth centres in Finland.

In order to simplify the chain name, it has been decided that the K-Alliance will mainly use one marketing name in its sports goods trade. The majority of Kesport-Intersport stores have been renamed and are now called Intersport stores. The biggest units with a sales area of over 1,500 square metres are called Intersport Megastores. Kesport remains as the marketing name for stores located in rural population centres.

Kesport-Intersport is the leading chain in the sports goods trade in Finland. The chain includes 86 stores. Their total sales in 1999 amounted to FIM 1,172 million. Kesko is a partner in the world’s largest sports goods store chain Intersport International IIC, which operates a total of over 4,200 stores in 25 countries.
