Coronavirus precautions and prevention in K Group/Kesko

We began actively monitoring developments regarding the COVID-19 coronavirus early on. We work in close cooperation with authorities and follow guidelines issued by them. We are doing everything we can to ensure the wellbeing of our customers and personnel as well as operational continuity.

Product availability and inventory management

Customers can visit our stores as normal. Food availability is good and restocking takes place every day. We have prepared for potential availability issues by raising our inventory levels, and we have been working with our partners for some time now to ensure good product availability. The majority of products sold in K-food stores come from Finland: thousands of our food suppliers in Finland have also prepared for the situation.

Logistics

We also have extensive plans in place for ensuring continuity in transports and logistics. Deliveries to stores take place as usual, in some cases daily. We have a well-functioning chain: the availability of food and hygiene products from suppliers is good, our transportation services are running, and the display of products in the stores is effective.

Safety of employees and customers

We are doing everything we can to ensure that our employees remain healthy and can work and that our stores are safe for customers to visit. We work in close cooperation with authorities and follow guidelines issued by them. We are doing everything we can to ensure the wellbeing of our customers and personnel as well as operational continuity.

Hygiene

Good hygiene is crucial in preventing the virus from spreading both in the stores as well as offices. We have emphasised the importance of good hygiene and obligated our retailers to go over tighter hygiene guidelines with their staff. We refrain from shaking hands and stress the importance of washing hands and the correct way to cough.
As during regular flu season, we recommend that tongs and ladles for salads, meal and sushi bars and baked goods and sweets sold separately are replaced more often. Many stores have also placed hand sanitiser stations near such products.

Employees cannot come to work when sick

It is very important that people do not come to work if they are sick. We have issued instructions on how to deal with employees who get sick or are placed in quarantine, and ensured our occupational health services can function. If the nature of work allows it, team members have been asked to work separately, preferably from home.
We have advised both our personnel and retailers to immediately notify emergency services if they suspect persons in our facilities are breaking quarantine.

Increased cleaning

We ensure good hygiene at both our offices and our stores. Good hygiene extends to employees and facilities. We have employed increased cleaning protocols since the beginning of March. Contact surfaces, such as door handles, elevator buttons, screens etc. are to be cleaned with care. We have issued similar instructions also to non-employees visiting or working in our facilities.

Authority guidelines

We will do everything we can to make sure it is safe to visit our stores. So far, authorities in Finland have not issued guidelines for store operations. Should they do that, we are prepared to comply with immediate effect.

Deliveries to restaurants

The main task of Kesko’s foodservice wholesale company Kespro is to ensure continuous availability of products and supplies to restaurants. We have reviewed the situation with our customers, and are optimising delivery frequency and volumes to restaurants accordingly, thus helping them to reduce costs and food waste.
