K Group’s own grocery brand Pirkka has a significant impact on employment in Finland, as Pirkka products are manufactured by some 180 companies around the country. For many small Finnish companies, Pirkka offers the opportunity to access a national market and grow their production in a controlled manner.
Pirkka is part of the “Ole osa hyvän ketjua” (“Be a link in a chain of good”) campaign launched by the Association for Finnish Work, K Group, Ruokatieto yhdistys ry, the Finnish Horticultural Products Society and various Finnish companies, which aims to encourage Finns to buy food, home and speciality goods, and building and renovation supplies made in Finland.
Some 1,000 products in the Pirkka range are made in Finland, and over 600 carry an indication of Finnish origin:
Some 300 the Hyvää Suomesta (Produce of Finland) label
some 100 the Seed leaf symbol
some 200 the Key Flag symbol
Laundry vinegar from Heinävesi
Environmental aspects affect people’s purchase choices when it comes to cleaning products. Consequently, Pirkka’s range of detergents is also being updated. The latest addition is a laundry vinegar made by the Finnish family-owned company Berner in Heinävesi. The product carries the Key Flag symbol.
Laundry vinegar can be used to replace fabric softener. The Pirkka laundry vinegar is based on white vinegar produced in Finland, which is biodegradable and consequently offers a lower chemical load.
