Rautakesko has published a guidebook on sustainable housing that is available for free in all K-rauta and Rautia stores throughout Finland. Under the theme 'Choice for tomorrow' the guide gives practical tips which encourage Finns to reduce their environmental load generated from housing. By making even small changes in our practices we can all contribute to slowing climate change.
The guide contains information on energy-efficient homes, various heating options, water consumption, waste segregation, and recycling. The guide is also available at www.k-rauta.com and www.rautia.fi.
"Together with our retailers and suppliers, we wanted to compile a guide which would help Finns make choices promoting sustainable housing," says Jari Lind, President of Rautakesko.
The objective of the EU is to reduce greenhouse emissions by 20% from the 1990 level by 2020. Construction and living are now included in the project for the first time. Buildings use nearly 40% of all the energy consumed. Approximately one third of the carbon dioxide emissions in Finland are generated from energy consumption of buildings. While energy consumption of new buildings can be controlled by provisions, there is a really significant savings potential in the existing building stock.
"With our actions, which may often seem small, we can benefit the environment. Many small things make a big difference in environmental issues. Often it is only a question of changing the way of thinking and making a small effort - not of money or great sacrifices," says Kimmo Tiilikainen, Minister of the Environment.
Finland is currently drawing up its energy and climate strategy on activities taken in order to achieve the challenging objectives. Individual households will play a significant role in the implementation of the activities.
