The retailers of the K-citymarket chain donated EUR 28,700 to UNICEF, which will channel the money into supporting the school attendance of the child victims of the Asian tsunami disaster. This is the third largest single donation to the tsunami operation through UNICEF Finland.
Last year, after the tsunami had hit Asia on Boxing Day, the K-citymarket retailers opened a joint fundraising account. UNICEF, operating for the benefit of children, was a natural recipient of the funds because the K-Alliance has long been an active supporter of children's activities and the organisation has been one of its major partners.
”We wanted to contribute to helping the child victims of the tsunami in particular in order that they could lead their daily lives as normally as is possible after such a catastrophe. Therefore we decided to direct the amount to their schooling," says retailer Kari Salminen, Chairman of the K-citymarket Chain Executive Committee.
So far, UNICEF Finland has raised EUR 2.8 million for the child victims of the tsunami. The organisation will use the K-citymarket retailers' donation to a children's schooling programme in Indonesia. "We will send there 205 School-in-a-Box kits that supply the need for teaching tools and equipment of 16,000 children during one year," says Pentti Kotoaro; Secretary General of UNICEF Finland.
