Sustainability indexes

Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes
The DJSI World Index lists some 340 companies and the DJSI Europe index some 170 companies. Reviews are carried out by SAM Group of Switzerland and cover all areas of corporate responsibility. Kesko has been included in the Dow Jones sustainability indexes for nine years in succession. For the period 2011/2012, Kesko was chosen for the list in both of the indexes, DJSI World and DJSI Europe. In the annual review 2011, Kesko was given the highest scores in the sector for Customer Relationship Management and for Codes of Conduct/Compliance/Corruption&Bribery.

 

 
SAM (Sustainable Asset Management) annually assesses over 2,000 companies in terms of responsibility work and has published an edition of the Sustainability Yearbook for 13 years. The Sustainability Yearbook includes companies only the top 15% of which in each sector qualify among the world's leaders according to SAM's assessment.

In the 2012 Sustainability Yearbook, Kesko was selected among sustainability leaders in the Food & Drug Retailers sector.

The Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations
'The Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations' list has been published at the World Economic Forum in Davos since 2005. Kesko has been on the list since it was launched.  On the list announced in January 2012, Kesko placed 43rd. The list is initated by Corporate Knights magazine with strategic partners Legg Mason's Global Currents Investment Management and Phoenix Global Advisors LLC. In 2012, eleven indicators of sustainable development were used to evaluate companies.


FTSE4Good
The companies included for the FTSE4Good family of indices published since 2001 represent pioneers in responsible business. For the purposes of the FTSE4Good indices, companies are assessed in five different areas: environmental sustainability, human rights, countering bribery, supply chain labour standards and climate change.

 

In order to qualify for inclusion in the FTSE4Good family of indices, the operations of the company have to meet criteria requirements in all of the areas. Assessments for the London-based FTSE Group are carried out by an independent Ethical Investment Research Service (EIRIS).

As of 2009, Kesko has been included as a member in the FTSE4Good indices. Kesko's overall score in the FTSE4Good index assessment in 2011 was 92/100. Kesko's work for curbing climate change was given 5 points on a scale 0-5. For supply chain labour standards and corporate governance Kesko received 4 points.

STOXX Global ESG Leaders
Kesko is included in the STOXX Global ESG Leaders index family, which represents the leading global companies in terms of environmental, social and governance criteria. The index family consists of these three specialised categories and an overall index amalgamating their results. The 2011 rating (12 October 2011) included 1,537 companies of which 316 were included in the Leaders indexes. Of the 18 Finnish companies rated, seven were included in the indexes.

2011 World's Most Ethical Companies - Ethisphere TM Institute
In March 2011, Kesko was named as one of the World's Most Ethical Companies for 2011 by the Ethisphere Institute. Ethisphere's WME list recognises companies' ethical leadership, compliance practices and corporate social responsibility. In 2011, there are 110 World's Most Ethical companies.

OMX GES Sustainability Nordic
In July, 2010, Kesko qualified to the OMX GES Sustainability Index calculated by NASDAQ OMX in cooperation with GES Investment Services. It is a benchmark index which comprises the 50 leading NASDAQ OMX Copenhagen, Helsinki, Stockholm and Oslo Bors listed companies in terms of sustainability.

 

OMX GES Sustainability Finland
In March 2011, Kesko qualified to the OMX GES Sustainability Finland index calculated by NASDAQ OMX and GES Investment Services. It is a benchmark index which comprises the 40 leading NASDAQ OMX Helsinki listed companies in terms of sustainability.

The Carbon Disclosure Project
The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) provides a coordinating secretariat and innovative forum for investor and corporate collaboration on climate change. In October 2011, Kesko was featured in CDP's Nordic 'Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index' for the second time. Kesko's disclosure score was the highest in the Consumer Staples sector. 

Ethibel
Kesko has been selected for inclusion in the Ethibel PIONEER and Ethibel EXCELLENCE Investment Registers (www.ethibel.org) since 16/12/2003 and recently reconfirmed on 17/12/2010) and is being monitored regarding its CSR profile since then. These Investment Registers form the basis for the European Collective Quality labels ‘ETHIBEL PIONEER’ and ‘ETHIBEL EXCELLENCE’, which is awarded to investment funds and financial products only.

A database on www.ethibel.org gives access to the list of constituents of both the Ethibel PIONEER and Ethibel EXCELLENCE Investment Registers and the Ethibel Sustainability Indices. Kesko is included in the ESI Excellence Europe index.



 

Other indexes
Several other assessments have been made of Kesko with the purpose of helping investors and financial service providers implement investment strategies in line with sustainable development.

The German oekom research assesses companies based on 200 environmental and social responsibility criteria. The analyses of oekom currently affect around 90 billion in assets under management. Oekom has assigned Kesko a prime grade of C+ (latest in January 2011). This means that Kesko ranks among the world's best companies within the same industry.
